Exploring Hobbies and Activities During the Pandemic: Gardening, Coin Collecting, and Survival Skills

Living through a global pandemic has brought about an array of challenges and changes for many individuals. For me, the pandemic period offered an opportunity to pick up new hobbies and activities that not only provided a sense of normalcy but also served as an outlet for personal growth and relaxation. In this article, we will explore three activities that have become a significant part of my life and how they have enriched my experience during these uncertain times.

1. Gardening: Nurturing Life and Satisfaction

One of the most fulfilling activities I engaged in during the pandemic was starting a garden. It began as a simple way to pass the time and connect with nature while confined indoors. With just a few potted plants on my balcony, I gradually expanded to a small backyard garden. The joy of nurturing plants and watching them grow brought me immense satisfaction. Harvesting my own fruits and vegetables not only provided a sense of accomplishment but also offered a sustainable and healthy lifestyle.

As life begins to normalize, I am committed to continuing to garden, as it remains a rewarding hobby that not only enriches my life but also provides a tranquil escape during stressful times.

2. Coin Collecting: A Budget-Friendly Hobby for Durability

Another hobby that caught my attention during the pandemic is coin collecting. While some coins can indeed be worth a significant amount of money, the primary motivation for me was the sheer enjoyment and focus it provided. It is a budget-friendly hobby that keeps my mind and hands actively engaged, allowing me to concentrate on one thing at a time, thus reducing stress and promoting mindfulness.

3. Survival Skills: Civilian Preparedness Amidst Uncertainty

As someone who served in the military, I found myself teaching survival skills to others, primarily out of a sense of preparedness for potential challenges in the future. I recently bought a hair cutting kit and taught myself to become better at it, a skill I now intend never to use a professional for. This newfound ability saves me time and money, and in the pandemic, it also adds an extra layer of health assurance.

Additionally, I have taken on a new role in training others in various subjects. I have been approached by people who believe that a “bad time” is coming, and I am now instructing others in specific areas. This includes my current “top student,” who has received over 70 hours of training and is quite proficient in certain fields. My experience teaching and preparing others has been both unexpected and rewarding.

My role as a trainer in survival skills and other subjects is not just a hobby but a way to contribute to the preparedness of those around me in uncertain times. While it may seem unusual for someone my age to be involved in such activities, it reflects the changing nature of our world, where individual preparedness and resilience are increasingly important.

These hobbies and activities have not only filled my time but also provided a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Whether it be through nurturing plants, collecting coins, or teaching survival skills, they have all enriched my life during the pandemic and beyond.
