Part of this immersion included the experience of Turkish baths, or hams.Initially, my partner and I prepared by slipping out of our clothes and wrapping ourselves in towels. Next, we entered a sauna where the hot, humid environment prepared our bodies for what was to come. After a brief stay, two women escorted us to a lavish marble slab. We were to lie on it and prepare for a unique and somewhat surreal experience.
During this process, we were cleaned with soap and scrubbers, a meticulous, almost ritualistic act. However, it quickly became clear that the experience was not wholly visual or sensory. About 15 minutes into the process, one of the women stealthily slipped her hand under our towels, pouring hot water down our backsides without warning. This unexpected act took both of us by surprise, pushing the boundaries of what I expected from this cultural immersion.
