Experiences and Truths: The Reality of Girls' Ragging in ISM Dhanbad

As a third-year student at Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad, I felt compelled to share my honest opinions about the reality of girls' ragging at this esteemed institution. My intention is to provide a truthful perspective that will help prospective students make informed decisions.

Experiences of Ragging

Firstly, I would like to clarify that my experiences and the accounts shared by my friends might not represent the entirety of the student body or the institution's policies. However, I believe that sharing my personal experiences and those of my friends will provide a broader and more nuanced understanding.

Personal Experience: As a second-year student, I can attest to the fact that while there is some form of ritualized new student interaction, it is by no means comparable to what some seniors might promote as ragging. Limited to giving an introduction and certain behavioral constraints, such as restrictions on wearing chappals or going out of the hostel, this interaction can be considered more of a bonding session than a form of harassment.

On the other hand, a third-year student, who is now aware of the true nature of the institution, shares a contrasting view. According to her, ragging does exist and is more extensive than what I experienced. She mentions that male students face a more severe form of ragging, including stalking, nudity, and physical abuse. Although she acknowledges that initially, it may seem like a harmless introduction, the truth comes to light only upon joining the college.

Support and Safety

Despite the differences in experiences, it is crucial to mention that senior students do behave positively towards juniors, especially female students. Seniors may sometimes scold for not following rules, but this should not be considered disrespectful. They are always supportive and helpful.

The campus itself is deemed safe for girls. It provides a secure environment for female students, as evidenced by my personal experiences and my friend's account. The city of Dhanbad is also considered safe, with freedom to roam around the campus until midnight.

Conclusion and Advice

After thoroughly considering my experiences and those of my friends, I would like to conclude with the following points:

It is essential for both boys and girls to understand the reality of ISM Dhanbad, whether it includes ragging or not. Prospective students should not solely rely on anecdotal information but should consider joining the college to determine its atmosphere for themselves. For those who prefer a welcoming and respectful environment, ISM Dhanbad might not be the ideal choice. On the other hand, for those who can handle its pressures, it can be a valuable learning experience.

While this piece aims to present a balanced view, I welcome discussions and further insights to help current and prospective students make well-informed decisions.
