Escaping Quicksand and Mud: Tales from the Road

The Adventure of a Young Automotive Enthusiast

I was a young guy, probably 18, just getting my truck license. My experiences in the field were both hilarious and grueling. I was working for a local excavating contractor—a figure who, despite his dangerous vices, was a walking advertisement for the wrong way to live. Yet, he knew how to make the ground move on any kind of job, and he appreciated my willingness to learn and work hard. I excelled as a weekend apprentice, learning invaluable skills and earning free on-the-job training. But, like his risky behavior, most of the money from my earnings went to support his less savory habits.

Quicksand Incursion

One of the most memorable tasks was the construction of a road for a real estate development. We had a Cat D8 on-site, cutting grade down for the road, but the site had a hidden surprise: a wet spot on the back side of a hill, which turned out to be a spring in some form of quicksand. The machine started sinking rapidly as it hit the soft ground, unable to penetrate the layers of mud and sand. Efforts to pull it out using a large excavator were met with the same stubbornness and mud, trapping the machine deeper with each attempt.

It took us all day to dig out the machine, loading countless bags of cobble-sized stones to create a stable ramp for the excavator. Despite the heavy labor involved, it was a valuable learning experience. I understood the power of both muddiness and determination.

Mud Puddles and Difficulties

In another episode, I dealt with a more common but equally frustrating situation. One day, I thought I was driving into a shallow puddle. Little did I know, it was a deep mud hole, rendering my mini floor-jack useless. A kind passerby with a large pickup truck volunteered to help me for 20 dollars, making the difference between a dry evening and a tough hike to town for a tow truck. The story of that encounter serves as a reminder of the kindness in the world, always be ready to help and be prepared with creative solutions.

Expedient Escapes and Frustrating Fords

There were numerous times I faced significant challenges while driving, especially in rocky creek fords and along steep dirt roads. On one particularly tiring day, near the end of my shift, I drove down a steep dirt road with the sun at my back. When I reached the bottom, I realized I was too fatigued to climb back up. The next morning, I unloaded the car, removed all four doors, and took a running start to power my way back up the hill. Once back on the road, I had to haul the doors and cargo up manually, an experience that was both taxing and humbling.

Solutions and Traps

The trips to escape quicksand and mud were far from over. Each trap required a different strategy. Some required light vehicles, others needed strong excavators, and some were just waiting for an unexpected and frustrating driving experience. These moments of difficulty taught me the importance of preparation, both in materials and mindset. Carrying the right tools and staying alert to changing road conditions can prevent a long and strenuous journey to tow trucks or roadside assistance.
