Embracing Risks: Lessons from a Lifelong Journey
Life is a series of choices and risks that we must take to achieve our goals and find growth. My journey to becoming a successful person is no different, marked by a series of challenges that required me to step out of my comfort zone. From facing my first bully at age five to confronting the challenges of adulthood, I have learned valuable lessons about taking risks that have shaped my life in immeasurable ways.
Young Beginnings: Facing the First Bully
Age 5, 1955: The year started with a lesson that would stay with me for a lifetime ā my first encounter with a bully. Burdened by the belief that good always triumphed, I approached the situation with a sense of righteousness and fairness. In an effort to reason with the bully, I implored, 'Stop that,' but to no avail. My next move was to assert my bravery with a standing challenge, 'Iām not afraid of you.' However, the response was a punch to the gut and a shove to the ground. Despite the unexpected physical and emotional pain, my brain interpreted the experience as a success, not because of the act itself, but because I stood up for what I believed was right.
This early lesson in standing up to bullies shaped my later behavior, where I continued to confront such situations, even those that didn't end well for me. The bullying eventually subsided in my various schools, and I believe my actions played a role. The simplest act of standing tall under pressure can deter future bullies, as they find little pleasure in confronting someone who remains unafraid. Over time, the resistance to fear achieved through such experiences taught me to face risk head-on.
Academic and Life Risks
Another period of my life where I had to take calculated risks was during my educational journey. Success in academia often depends on the willingness to take risks and show initiative. Unlike parental motivation or friendship, personal drive is one of the most crucial factors in achieving academic success. Each day brings new challenges, from tests and projects to essay writing and presentations. If we cannot muster the effort to face these challenges head-on, our academic journey will progress only so far. However, failing in studies should not discourage us; rather, it is a valuable learning experience that makes us stronger and better prepared for future endeavors. It is in moments like these that the support of family becomes crucial. Family is not just a constant in our lives but a source of strength and encouragement, enabling us to face any risk with courage.
Challenges Away from Family
Another significant stage where taking risks became necessary was when I was far from my family. Family is a cornerstone of our lives, but despite its importance, there are times when we must venture out on our own, away from the comfort and support of loved ones. This separation from family often brings unforeseen challenges, from finding a job to navigating new social circles. These experiences are essential for personal growth and development. Every risk we take when away from family is a step towards self-reliance and resilience. The importance of action and the need to act cannot be underestimated; being silent in the face of challenges only prolongs difficulties and prevents us from growing.
Everyday Risks and Future Challenges
Undeniably, we must sometimes take chances in order to achieve our goals. It is during these moments that we learn from failure and see clearer paths to success. Each experience, whether it succeeds or fails, teaches us resilience and adaptability. Moreover, we take risks every day ā from the simple act of driving to work, to voicing our opinions. Embracing these risks means stepping into the unknown, but it is also a path to personal fulfillment and achievement.
This reflection on risks and successalso includes my own experience answering questions on Quora. While the nature of the risks I face in such an environment is different, the underlying principle remains the same. I commit to not taking chances on my faith and eternity, knowing that our ultimate goal is to worship the image of God's Son.
