Daenerys Targaryen's Will to Defy: Her True Path to Power
One prominent question arises in the realm of A Song of Ice and Fire: will Daenerys Targaryen bend the knee when she discovers Jon's true heritage? This scenario, while intriguing, would be misplaced and out of line with the logic and motivations of the characters involved. Power is not merely about holding land or areas; it is the embodiment of an army and the political will to command that force. As Jon Snow's hold over the North is just a fraction of what Dany currently possesses, it cannot substitute for her position as the rightful heir.
After Dany's death, the kingdoms will inevitably fall into another conflict. Given that Daenerys will not have a child of her own, her demise would thrust the entire realm into chaos. Politically, only one individual has the potential to maintain order without resorting to war: Jon Snow. Alternatively, the union between Dany and Jon might serve as a binding force, as it is highly likely, especially considering the volatile situation brought on by the Long Night.
However, there is a significant misunderstanding about the motivations of the women from the Great Houses. These characters need political power to feel physically safe. This need is an inherent part of their character arcs, whether they are Catelyn Stark, Sansa Stark, Cersei Lannister, or Daenerys Targaryen. Each of these women either seeks the ability to project power against real and perceived enemies or relies on male relatives or vassals to do so for them.
Catelyn and Sansa are dependent on others to protect them from physical threats. In contrast, Daenerys and Cersei actively seek to wield power themselves and to protect and isolate themselves.
Dany and Cersei share a similar narrative arc, having learned that the men around them either cannot or will not protect them. Drogon died instead of keeping his khalasar together, and Tywin Lannister abandoned her. Tywin intended to forcibly marry Cersei against her will, demonstrating a pattern of male failure in protecting these powerful women. In her speeches and actions, Dany emphasizes the strength and self-reliance she gains from her own political power.
In conclusion, Daenerys Targaryen has no motivation to bend the knee. In fact, she is driven by a strong desire to maintain and assert her own political power. This is a testament to the strength of her character and her unwavering belief in her ability to govern the Seven Kingdoms herself.
