Creating My Own Traditions as I Navigate Life's Journey
As an Indian American who grew up in a mix of both Indian and Western cultures, I've always found myself navigating the rich tapestry of traditions unique to my heritage. While I am Hindu in religion, I also embrace certain Western cultural practices, finding a blend that resonates with who I am today.
My Personal Traditions
Here are some of the traditions that I have created and continue to cherish:
Hindu Festivals: I celebrate all Hindu festivals and make sure to attend a Hindu temple during these times. From Diwali's vibrant lights to the serene atmosphere of Pongal, I find solace and joy in these moments of community and faith. Decorations and Lights: I decorate my home with lights for Diwali, transforming my space into a festive and warm environment. Similarly, I decorate for Christmas with a Christmas tree and lights, blending the Western spirit with my cultural roots. Cooking and Baking: During the Christmas holiday season, I bake a variety of treats like cakes, cookies, and brownies. Holidays are about more than just gatherings; they are about celebration and the love of family through food. Art Projects: I also engage in simple art projects to honor both Indian and Western holidays. These projects not only foster creativity but also serve as a connection to the rich cultural heritage I carry within me.Starting a New Tradition
The last two years have been particularly memorable, especially when it came to our Christmas Eve tradition. Two years ago, my younger daughter was breastfeeding her 6-month-old baby, who had numerous food sensitivities and allergies. We decided to have tacos for our Christmas Eve dinner. This meal allowed us to enjoy a delicious and varied selection while avoiding the offending foods. We had such a good time that we decided to continue this tradition every year. This new tradition was a wonderful way to reconnect with the future, ensuring that moments of joy and togetherness remain at the heart of our celebrations.
Life is Life, Always Changing
Even though I am well into my life journey, I am still very much in the process of creating and adapting my own traditions. It's rare for people to maintain the exact same traditions as their parents or grandparents, especially as the world continues to change. I, myself, grew up in a place where my traditions were a mix of my parents' cultural and religious practices. As I've lived in different places and faced new experiences, my traditions have evolved and expanded.
While some people prefer to maintain a particular set of traditions, allowing the local ones to pass by like a river, I value the rootedness and memories that my expanded traditions bring. I believe that my traditions will continue to grow and expand as long as I live, making each tradition a reflection of the unique experiences and moments that have shaped me.
