Confidence Beyond Self-Assertion: Embracing True Self-Confidence in Christ

Everyone has their own strengths and areas of confidence, but does the need to constantly announce these attributes make one truly self-confident? Let's explore what true self-confidence means and how it can be cultivated through faith in Christ.

The Myth of Self-Assertion

Many people confuse self-assertion with self-confidence. In my experience, simply stating that you are confident about certain aspects of your life often does not reflect true self-confidence. I am confident in my work, for instance, but not so much in other areas. Would it be appropriate to broadcast my areas of confidence to everyone I encounter?

Blaming others while obsessing over their evaluations is not a sign of true self-confidence. The definition of self-confidence presupposes a lack of need to publicly announce your confidence levels. Other people can observe your attributes without further explanation from you.

Confidence and entitlement can sometimes blur, making it challenging to distinguish between the two. However, true self-confidence recognizes that each person is wonderfully made and doesn't need to prove their worth or masculinity to others. Psalm 139:13–14 serves as a reminder that every individual is cherished by God.

The Toxic Nature of Over-Emphasis on Self-Confidence

Stagnating on the concept of self-confidence can be a harmful practice. True confidence stems from a deeper source: God and your inherent worth in Christ alone. When you find assurance and reliance in Him, you become content with any societal problems, reflecting that through your life.

True self-confidence involves believing in your ability to handle life's challenges, maintaining a positive outlook, and accepting yourself as worthy and valuable. This confidence, however, incorporates God as a central element. Without acknowledging God, self-confidence remains a twisted version of true confidence in Christ.

Building True Confidence in Christ

True confidence begins with accepting that God is real and that He sent Jesus to offer eternal life. When you truly believe and accept this, a profound shift occurs. You realize that you are now a child of God, precious in His sight, and that the Holy Spirit guides you in your heart.

With this understanding, you embrace the notion that God has a plan for your life, and any circumstances align with His love for you. This perception fosters contentment and removes discontentment, replacing pride and self-assurance with gratitude and happiness.

Ultimately, true self-confidence is not about boasting of your achievements or mocking others. Instead, it is about finding contentment in your true identity in Christ and the confident trust in His plan for your life.

Therefore, let's strive to embrace true self-confidence that surpasses self-assertion and focuses on the foundations of faith in Christ.
