Community Dynamics in Small Villages
The interactions and dynamics among people in small villages can vary greatly depending on the community and its history. From the warm and loving embrace of one village to the colder and more contentious atmosphere of another, the nature of village relations is as diverse as the people who inhabit them.
The Loveliest of People
One such lovely village was my first posting, a small town of about 100 people where I served as the Postmaster. The residents were predominantly the Lane, Cunningham, and Hazelbaker families, who had migrated from Scotland to Kentucky. These were the best people you could ever know, with an elderly gentleman who brought me a perfect rose every day, a tradition that lasted during my tenure in this village.
Every week, I was invited to lunch at their homes, and they were always welcoming. This community was tight-knit, with most people over 70 years old. Their tales and folklore were fascinating, and I even wrote a paper on their history during my college years. The warmth and hospitality of this small village were truly heartwarming.
A Wretched Community
However, not all small villages have the same positive atmosphere. Moving to a nearby town with around 550 residents, I experienced a different kind of dynamics. This was a community that shared a single, wretched personality, which they displayed to everyone. I vividly recall the residents who watched over the American flag, enforcing a strict code that no one dared to break.
The Flag Police, as I called them, watched every day and night to ensure that the flag was put up and taken down correctly. Their scrutiny was intense, and any deviation from the expected behavior was met with disdain. What followed was one of the most difficult experiences of my life, which is marked by a very complicated marriage and the emotional turmoil it caused.
Personal Struggles and Community Impact
My marriage was deeply emotionally complex. Both my husband and I had been abandoned as young children, causing us to have a difficult relationship, filled with negative feelings and acting out of past hurts. Witnessing these negative behaviors in my son, who was just getting to articulate his feelings, was heartbreakingly painful.
One night, when my son started to say that he hated his father, I saw a turning point. The neighbors in this town, who were known for their nosiness, came to intervene, believing that they were helping. However, their actions were more harmful than beneficial, and I was left with a hurt heart and a son who was beginning to distance himself emotionally.
The neighborhood was spectacularly bad, filled with gossip, constant nosiness, and overall negative interactions. It was clear that this was a community where honesty and respect were not valued, and such negative interactions deeply impacted my family and personal life.
A New Beginning
Leaving that armpit of hell and moving to a new small town, I found a more harmonious and supportive community. This town had 800 residents and stop signs where it made sense, making it a quiet and clean place to live. Here, neighbors looked out for each other, and there were fewer conflicts.
Despite its small size and some not-so-welcoming residents, the community was made up of good people who helped each other and kept their doors unlocked. The town was white and majority had a racist undertone, which made it less suitable for raising a child of a different ethnicity. But the safety and support offered were invaluable.
In summary, the nature of village life can vary widely, from the warmth and love found in one village to the harshness and negativity of another. Understanding the dynamics of a community is crucial, as it can deeply impact your personal life and experiences.
