During certain months, it becomes a polluted hell hole, and the relentless construction and development have made the city less like the quaint "Rose of the North."

Pros of Chiang Mai

Cultural Hub: Chiang Mai is a hub of culture, with a rich history and vibrant local community. Natural Beauty: The city offers stunning temples and lush gardens for a more serene experience. Friendly Community: Known for its friendly and welcoming locals, Chiang Mai is an excellent choice for those looking to immerse themselves in Thai culture. Education: Many opportunities to find teaching jobs, especially for TESOL. Less Crowded: Despite becoming more developed, it is still less crowded than some other Thai destinations.

Cons of Chiang Mai

Pollution: The burning season, which starts in December and lasts until late April, can dramatically reduce air quality. Rapid Development: The city is experiencing rampant construction and development, which has increased property values and traffic congestion. Burned Out: Living in Chiang Mai can be less enjoyable during the burning season, making it difficult to live there all year round. Small Town Charm: Gone: The city is no longer as quaint as it once was and has been designated as "Bangkok of the North."

In an average year, Chiang Mai is enjoyable for about 9 months. Therefore, if you are planning to live in Thailand year-round, you may want to consider spending your time in Chiang Mai from August to February.

Krabi: The Pros and Cons

Pros of Krabi

Beaches and Natural Beauty: Krabi is famous for its pristine beaches and breathtaking natural scenery. Quietness: When It Matters: Unlike Chiang Mai, Krabi is less polluted, especially during the months of February to May, making it a great place to live. Year-Round Choices: Krabi offers year-round enjoyment, but a well-planned stay can maximize the experience. Less Disturbances: It is less affected by the burning season and has a more relaxed atmosphere, free from the hustle and bustle of Chiang Mai.

Cons of Krabi

Seasonal Rainfall: Krabi experiences heavy rainfall from August to May, making the climate less desirable. Heat: The hot and humid climate can be intense, especially during the summer months. Tourist Attraction: Parts of Krabi can be tourist traps, with high costs, mainly in Ao Nang and Krabi Town. Lessive Boredom: If you stay during the rainy season or extremely hot months, Krabi can become boring and unappealing.

In my experience, I prefer visiting Krabi from February to May when it is less polluted and more enjoyable. During the remaining months, it either rains non-stop or is too hot. To avoid these downsides, I usually stay in Klong Muang, which is conveniently located near Ao Nang and Krabi Town.

If you are considering living in Thailand for an extended period, my recommendation is to split your time between Chiang Mai and Krabi. You could enjoy Chiang Mai from August to February, and then move to Krabi from February to May. By doing so, you can make the best use of Thailand's beautiful seasons and avoid its downsides.
