Choosing a Career in Hospitality: A Passion for Excellence and Impact
Why did you choose to have a career in the hotel industry?
Many students opt for a career in hospitality management for a myriad of reasons. Some are driven by a passion for customer service and creating memorable experiences, while others are attracted to the global opportunities and dynamic environment. Still, others find a natural fit in the blend of business and creativity that the industry offers, including roles in management, marketing, and event planning. For some, the field is also about connecting with different cultures and managing interpersonal relationships.
My Journey into Hospitality
My decision to work in the hospitality industry stemmed from a belief in its potential to provide exceptional experiences to guests, despite the challenges. I am passionate about creating moments that guests will remember, ensuring their comfort and satisfaction. The industry's dynamic nature allows me to constantly learn, grow, and forge connections with people from different cultural backgrounds. My belief is that every interaction provides an opportunity to positively impact someone's day and leave a lasting impression.
Dynamic and Fulfilling Environment
I wanted to work in hospitality because it offers a unique blend of creativity, interpersonal skills, and service. A service-oriented personality makes this industry a perfect match for me, as I thrive on creating memorable experiences for guests. There is immense satisfaction in contributing to a positive and welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, I enjoy the diverse settings and the chance to work with a variety of people, making each day exciting and fulfilling.
Exploring Other Paths
Coming from a background where the predominant professions were medicine and farming, the hospitality industry seemed like a natural choice for me. My eldest brother is a physician, so I have a strong understanding of the business aspects of patient care. While I don't have plans to retire from my current career, I do have options to return to my roots in farming if I choose to. I have ancestral land in Punjab that my brothers and their sons manage, as well as land in Louisiana that I personally oversee. These ventures involve growing organic food and raising animals, but they are not purely profit-driven. They provide me with a sense of fulfillment and enjoyment.
Lambardar: An Enduring Title
In the context of my personal life, I still cherish the idea of being a Lambardar. This title, deeply rooted in Punjabi culture, signifies a position of respect and responsibility. Growing up, I often imagined myself as a Lambardar and felt a sense of pride when I heard songs referring to this role. Currently, I pursue farming as a lucrative but not solely profit-driven endeavor. My children, however, do not share the same enthusiasm for farming as I do and view it more as a tradition with financial implications.
The land I oversee in Louisiana is a mix of farmland and wildlife areas. My team is working to turn a few horses into race horses, although we haven't achieved success yet. Despite these challenges, the expenses of running the farm are self-sustaining, though they don't bring financial returns. The pleasure of having this land is that it allows me to claim the title of a Lambardar, a term that holds significant meaning for me due to the cultural context and songs I have heard since childhood. My Indian friends from South India struggle with pronouncing this term, but they do try.
While my primary focus is on the farming venture, I also enjoy a fulfilling personal life with my wife and children. The agricultural and recreational aspects of my work keep me occupied and add immense value to my life. I take great pleasure in working long hours and relishing the moments with my wife.
