Carrying the Unnecessary: A Personal Journey Through Practical and Superstitious Items
Carrying a handkerchief in your pocket might seem like a throwback to a bygone era, but for some, it serves a practical purpose. For others, however, the items they carry might not serve a practical purpose at all, yet these superstitious and sentimental objects have a place in their everyday lives.
A Pirate Coin and a Hunter’s Whistle
I am someone who often has several items in my pocket, much like most people. My keys, cell phone, wallet, and a pocket knife are essentials that I can’t do without. However, there’s one item that I carry with me, albeit not for practical purposes—my pirate coin.
This coin comes with a pirate-themed deck of playing cards and holds no monetary value. Its primary purpose is to bring me luck, a superstition strengthened by my love for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. It’s a small reminder of my favorite college football coach, nicknamed 'the Pirate,' and a gift from my mother.
Another item that I carry is a very loud whistle, a memento from my years of scuba diving. I use this whistle not just for emergencies, like waking up neighbors or calling for help, but also for the sheer joy of hearing it.
The Purpose Behind Every Carried Item
Everything I carry serves a purpose, whether it's for survival, necessity, or convenience. If it were not for a practical reason, I wouldn’t 'always' carry it. This is a principle I adhere to, ensuring that every item in my pocket has a purpose.
The Holy Bible
While most might carry a memento or superstitious item, there are some who carry something more significant. For instance, the Holy Bible is an item that holds profound value for those who believe in it. Regardless of whether it serves a practical purpose in daily life, it reminds believers of their faith and moral guidance.
Carrying Necessities and Beyond
Every item I carry is for a reason. Whether it’s a Swiss Army Knife for practical use, a flashlight for illumination, a tool to write with, or even a way to start a fire, each item has its place in my daily routine. Even scarier, I carry these items religiously, especially when I go to get the mail, to ensure that I am prepared for any situation that may arise.
Personal reflections on the items one carries serve as a window into one's character and values. Whether it’s a reminder of a loved one, a memento from a cherished pastime, or an essential tool for survival, the items we carry tell our story.
