Advice from the 20s to the Late Teenagers: Embrace Yourself and Life Unbound
As someone who has been in my 20s, I would like to share some wisdom with those still navigating the late teenage years. Here are some lessons that have helped me navigate the journey from late teenagers to young adulthood:
Just be yourself
‘If you can’t accept me when I am at my worst, then you certainly don’t deserve me when I am at my best.’ – these words ring true. Embracing your true self is not only freeing but also makes life more authentic and fulfilling.
Life is fleeting, and it is essential to prioritize authenticity over validation from others. Chasing perfection or the image of what others may want you to be is a path to both pain and disappointment.
Don’t care too much about what others think
While it is natural to seek validation and acceptance, it is crucial not to let external opinions dictate your happiness and well-being. Late teens can be a time of intense social pressure and comparison. It is okay to stand firm in your beliefs and values, even if they differ from those around you.
Accept that some people will never like you
Life is a never-ending journey and it is inevitable that not everyone will appreciate or accept you, and that's perfectly fine. Strive for the company of those who uplift you and celebrate your strengths, not those who bring you down or make you question yourself.
You can’t please everyone and trying to do so can make you crazy
It is a common mistake to believe that you can make everyone happy, but that's simply not possible. People often have different needs and desires, sometimes contradictory, which can be challenging to meet simultaneously. Ultimately, trying to cater to everyone's unique expectations will only lead to stress and burnout.
Instead of following the crowd, focus on your own values and what brings you genuine happiness. Learn to prioritize your well-being and recognize when it is time to draw boundaries.
People don’t like phonies, so don’t try to change for others
Being genuine is a powerful quality that attracts like-minded individuals. While it might be tempting to alter your behavior or mannerisms to fit in or gain acceptance, authenticity is undeniably the best foundation for any relationship.
Remember, if someone cannot accept you for who you are, they are not worthy of being in your life. Surround yourself with people who respect and support your true self.
If something is really worrying you, ask yourself if you will remember it a year from now
The future is uncertain, and most of the things that seem catastrophic in the moment often fade away with time. Reflecting on the importance of problems in your life can help you gain perspective and find balance.
It is easy to get overwhelmed by smaller issues, but keeping them in perspective can help you manage stress and anxiety. Focus on the things that truly matter and let go of the rest.
It’s okay to make mistakes. They are a part of life
Mistakes are inevitable and part of learning and growing. It is crucial to embrace them as opportunities for self-improvement, rather than dwelling on them. Each misstep is a stepping stone towards becoming a better version of yourself.
Learn from your mistakes and use them as a source of growth and wisdom. The sooner you let go of self-blame and learn from errors, the more resilient and adaptable you will become.
If you have to change for someone, they are not a real friend
True friendships are based on mutual respect and admiration. If someone expects you to sacrifice your values and happiness for their sake, they are not a true friend. Rather than compromising yourself, it is essential to cultivate relationships that support and challenge you to be your best self.
‘It is your life. If you don’t like the script, change it’
Your life is unique and yours to shape. Often, our lives can feel like a pre-written script, but it is never too late to rewrite it. Whether it involves a career change, pursuit of a passion, or a shift in perspective, you have the power within you to create the life you want.
Life is about taking control of your destiny. Embrace your choices and take action to achieve your goals. Whether you are happy or sad, staying positive and proactive will help you navigate through life's challenges.
It is never too late to learn something new
Learning is a lifelong process. Regardless of your age, it is never too late to acquire new knowledge, skills, and experiences. Life is full of opportunities for growth and discovery, and embracing new learning experiences can greatly enrich your life.
It is never too late to make new friends
Friendships are dynamic and can evolve over time. Even as you grow older, it is never too late to meet new people and form meaningful connections. Expanding your social circle can lead to new experiences, perspectives, and camaraderie. Be open to meeting new people and building connections that enrich your life.
