A Journey Through Recent Musical Purchases and Preferences

A Journey Through Recent Musical Purchases and Preferences

Music continues to be a significant part of my life, and over time, my preferences and purchasing habits have evolved alongside the music industry. Here, I will delve into some of the recent albums and individual songs that Irsquo;ve purchased and revisit a few moments from the past that have shaped my musical journey.

Recent Album and Individual Song Purchases

My latest album purchase was in May 2020, where I picked up both a comedy album and a soundtrack. The Nylon Degrees album by comedian Norman Gunston caught my attention, and I was eager to replace a snapped audiocassette from a previous collection. I also bought the soundtrack to the obscure Australian film 'Hard Knocks,' which features songs by some iconic Australian artists as well as some lesser-known ones. This purchase, along with the Bon Scott-led version of AC/DC's "High Voltage," made for an interesting addition to my collection.

For individual songs, my last purchase was on 03 April 2020, when I bought the latest song by my nephew, Blake Cateris, titled "Take Some Time." This can be found on his Bandcamp page. Another instance of individual song purchase was in previous years, specifically with Noah Reid's cover of Tina Turner's "Simply the Best" from the TV show _Schitt's Creek_. This cover has added depth and unique interpretation to a classic song, making it a favorite cover version.

Reflecting on Musical Preferences

One of my latest purchases was the album Carry Me Home by Mavis Staples and Levon Helm. Both artists are champions of soulful and evocative music, and their performances at Leon Helms' Midnight Ramble in 2011 were particularly memorable. Their powerful vocals and heartfelt performances continue to resonate with me.

In 2017, my brother and I ventured into a musical discussion about a project that was supposed to be a Fleetwood Mac farewell. However, Stevie Nicks' absence meant that the album didn't take shape as expected. Despite having friends in the band, this project seems to have pushed them apart, leaving us with fond memories of their previous collaborations instead.

Reflecting on my early 2000s appreciation for rock bands, I remember the excitement of purchasing "Angel of Retribution" by Judas Priest in 2005. The anticipation and early speculation about the reunion meant that I even checked at the local Best Buy store to try and secure a copy before its official release. I might have been a bit over the top with my enthusiasm, but that moment captured a sentiment of anticipation and fandom that has both passed and lingered over the years.

Over the years, my preference shifted from whole albums to individual songs. This change was partly influenced by a shift in the industry where fewer bands and artists were releasing albums with consistently good tracks across the entire disc. It became more common to find albums with just a couple of standout songs, while others were regarded as filler. This led to a decline in the popularity of full albums and a rise in the appreciation of individual tracks and covers.

Conclusion

My journey through recent musical purchases and preferences offers a glimpse into the evolution of music appreciation and the changes in the music industry. From the excitement of album releases to the focus on individual songs and covers, my choices reflect the broader changes music fans and the industry have faced over the years. Each purchase and re-listening continue to add to the rich tapestry of my musical journey.
