A Dream Deferred: My Journey to Freelance Journalism

A Dream Deferred: My Journey to Freelance Journalism

I have always been captivated by the world of media. My weekend afternoons as a teenager were often spent engrossed in radio talk shows and TV programs, particularly those with intriguing features. Despite harboring a keen interest, I soon realized my true interest lay not in delivering breaking news, but rather in contributing creatively to the story.

A Vision for the Future

After graduating from high school, I envisioned myself embarking on a fulfilling career as a beat reporter for a local newspaper, or perhaps a desk writer in a bustling newsroom. The transition from school to the professional realm was an exciting prospect, filled with the potential to grow and learn. Scriptwriting for radio was a cherished dream, driven by the respect I had earned for the craft.

Challenges and Setbacks

However, life threw me an unexpected curveball when I was diagnosed with a mental health condition, bipolar disorder. My family and I hoped that with occasional depressive spells subsiding, I could manage without professional psychiatric help. As a result, I grew more functional again but the risk of a relapse and the associated stress from the demanding nature of journalism made me reconsider.

Embracing the Dream with Determination

Despite the reservations, my passion for journalism never truly waned. I was frequently praised for my creative writing and, with the advent of the internet and advanced software, researching and completing articles seemed more accessible than ever. Therefore, I decided to skip formal college and opted for a correspondence course in short story writing and freelance journalism through a distance learning institution.

Delving into Freelance Journalism

My modules provided me with a profound understanding that freelance journalism and writing were legitimate career fields. Through this, I discovered I had a particular fascination for feature articles, listicles, and first-person narratives of unexpected or life-changing experiences. This interest resonated with me deeply and served as a strong motivator throughout my journey.

Challenges and Successes

The path to success hasn't been linear. I faced challenges in managing my mental health while pursuing my career. But, the internet and the ability to work remotely offered a degree of flexibility that my earlier aspirations never provided. Today, I am proud to be a published writer in several websites, including SelfGrowth, EzineArticles, Amazines, and FaithWriters, and my essay is part of an online exhibit. I have also received recognition for a parenting article, which I submitted through

Each step of this journey has been a testament to the strength of my determination and the resilience of the human spirit. While pursuing my dreams, I have learned that sometimes the greatest successes come from facing and overcoming challenges.

Conclusion

My journey in freelance journalism is a story of passion, perseverance, and the importance of embracing our dreams. Despite the obstacles and the presence of bipolar disorder, I have managed to turn my childhood aspirations into a reality. Anyone with a dream and the willingness to work hard can overcome the odds and achieve their goals.
